For building owners / Cold storage

Sanctioned for the hottest week. Spare most of the year.

A cold store's connection is sized for every compressor running flat out on the hottest day, and most of the year the plant draws well under it. A dry side room on that margin may support an installation. An assessment and your agreement determine suitability, responsibilities and payment.

For cold storage

The compressors set the load. The calendar leaves most of it idle.

A cold store carries a sanctioned figure for the week every compressor runs at full load against the hottest afternoon of the year, and pays the fixed charges for that figure in December too. The plant runs around the clock, so there is no night-time trough; the margin is seasonal instead, and it is wide.

Where the room usually is

A dry side room with its own cooling: the documentation office beside the loading bay, a returns room kept at ambient, a store in the office block, or a plant-room annex that was oversized at build. Never a chamber, never an anteroom that is chilled. An installation is air-cooled at room temperature, and the room has to reject its heat with an ordinary unit.

What the load does

Sanctioned for every compressor at full load on the hottest afternoon of the year, and drawn well under that for most of the calendar. There is no night-time trough, because the plant runs around the clock; the margin is seasonal, and in a store sized for a fruit season or a summer peak it is wide. The spare is the sanctioned figure on your bill minus the twelve-month peak, and a plant engineer usually knows the month it falls in.

The assessment confirms the supply, tie-in and cooling an installation needs, and what your room can support.

Eligibility

Questions to answer first.

What decides whether a room in a cold store can be assessed for an installation, and what the assessment then checks on site.

Before the assessment

  1. Is there a dry room at ambient temperature, outside any chamber?

An installation is air-cooled at ordinary room temperature. A chamber or a chilled anteroom is not a starting point.

  2. In which months does the plant draw least, and how far under the sanctioned figure?

The margin in a cold store is seasonal rather than daily. Twelve months of bills show how wide it is.

  3. Is there panel headroom outside the compressor switchgear?

The assessment looks for a tie-in that does not share the switchgear your refrigeration depends on.

What the assessment checks

  • The metering point and the sanctioned figure against the hottest-month demand on the bills
  • Panel headroom for the tie-in an installation needs, on a panel that is not part of the compressor switchgear
  • A dry room at ambient with cooling of its own, sized for the installation and kept separate from the refrigeration plant
  • Condensation and humidity at the door: a room next to a chamber can sweat, and the assessment checks the room stays dry
  • Fire NOC currency, and distance from ammonia or refrigerant plant

The general guide to the initial requirements is on the owners page.

Operating considerations

Running an installation in a cold store.

The seasonal peak

In a heatwave the compressors need their headroom. How an installation's load is managed at your peak is assessed for the site and confirmed in your agreement.

Humidity and condensation

Rooms beside chambers can sweat. The room has to stay dry all year, and the assessment checks it at the door and at the wall.

A plant that never stops

A cold store already runs day and night, so there is no quiet shift to plan around. Service visits are arranged with your plant team and kept clear of loading.

Indicative pods from your room and power inputs

Counted from your room count and available power only. Room size and cooling are context for the assessment; they do not confirm that equipment fits.

Base payment assumed in this example
₹4.87 La year, ₹40,583 a month
Additional payment at the modelled duty Modelled, not yet measured
₹7.2 La year, ₹60,000 a month
Total in this example
₹12.07 La year, ₹1.01 L a month
  • Rooms set the count: one pod per room that locks. Your load would carry 2 pods at 14.4 kW each at the meter.

Assumptions in this example

  • Base payment: ₹4.87 L per pod per year.
  • Additional payment: ₹7.2 L per pod per year at the modelled duty, capped at ₹15 L to ₹18 L per pod per year.
  • One pod per room that locks, and about 14.4 kW of spare sanctioned load per pod at the meter.
  • Electricity is not in these figures. How it is metered and settled is confirmed in your agreement.

Questions cold store operators ask.

Can the installation go inside a chamber, or use our refrigeration to stay cool?+

No. It is air-cooled at ordinary room temperature and needs a dry side room with cooling of its own, which the assessment sizes.

We have no daytime trough. Is there still spare?+

The margin in a cold store is seasonal rather than daily: the sanctioned figure covers the hottest week and most months draw well under it. The assessment reads twelve months of bills and says plainly what the spare is.

What happens in a heatwave when the compressors need everything?+

Your refrigeration comes first in the design conversation. How the installation's load is managed at your peak is assessed for the site and confirmed in your agreement.

Is it connected to our DG?+

How an installation relates to your backup power is assessed on the single-line diagram and confirmed in your agreement.

Related buildings

  • WarehouseA warehouse is sanctioned for docks, chargers and lights at once, and draws that only in the peak shift. A locked room on that margin may support an Azita installation, subject to assessment and agreement.
  • FactoryA factory is sanctioned for every machine running at once and draws that only on a full shift. A locked store room on that margin may support an Azita installation, subject to assessment and agreement.
  • Industrial estateAn industrial estate has many units and rooms that were never let. Larger sites can host several installations, each room assessed and each set out in the agreement.
